February 5th, 2016 – Avian Friday: Chillin’ & Illin’

Owls are some of my favorite birds. to photograph. There are a few areas here in Western Washington that currently provide ideal habitat for their winter migration. The ones I know of are also frequented by a good number of other nature photographers.  Recently I’ve seen an increasing number of folks out wielding huge super telephoto lenses. You’d almost  think there was an NFL football game going on. Most of these areas are within a 20 mile radius of Skagit Valley.  Fir Island, Edison, and Stanwood, WA seem to always have several birds present between the months of December through early March. I try to make the 50 mile drive up from Seattle at least a few times and have run into others who’ve travelled as far as California to get a look at them. This shot of a Short-eared Owl was processed with a digital  artistic effect that I’ve been working with over the past year.  Let me know if you like it. Maybe I’ll print iteration a few others to put up as a giveaway on my Facebook page.
