March 6th, 2015 – Avian Friday: Whooo Gives a Hoot?
It’s been too long since I’ve gotten out to do any bird photography especially during this time of year when the Short-eared Owls are found here in Western Washington. I’ve heard reports of them being around and seen a few images captured by some photographer friends. There still might be a couple more weekends left before they make their spring departure from the area. I’d love to make it out to at least get a look or two at them. This one was captured a couple of seasons back at an area known as West 90 up in the Skagit Valley town of Edison. I was able to “sneak” up on this guy while he was resting peacefully on the perch by the side of the road. Using my truck as a mobile “blind”, I was able to ease up near him to get some decent shots. I’ll keep you posted if I make it up there again this year and get an image or two. Short-Eared Owl (Asio Flammeus) Edison, Washington 700mm | 1/640th Sec. @f/7.1 | ISO 400 Canon 1D Mark II+ Canon EF 500/4L IS USM + 1.4X Rear Extender Processed with Lightroom 5, Photoshop CC , Nik Define & ColorEfx Pro.
