December 21st, 2012 – Avian Friday: Belted Kingfisher
The Belted Kingfisher is a fairly common species here in the Pacific Northwest. They’re usually found around marshes, streams, rivers and saltwater estuaries where there is an abundant source of small fish for them to prey on. They quite leery of people and as such, somewhat difficult to approach for photography. I had to slap on a 2X teleconverter on the 500mm super-telephoto to get a few shots of this one.
