March 25th, 2011 – Avian Friday: Downy Woodpecker

Last week on a bike ride with my grandson we were treated with a very close encounter with a Pileated Woodpecker. I returned to the same spot a couple of days later armed this time with the super-telephoto lens on the camera. I didn’t see the Pileated anywhere, but did find a tree that looked like it might be used by them for nesting. I’ll have to report back later on that.  I did find some smaller birds including this Downy Woodpecker that allowed me to get close enough to it to capture a few images.
